Residents of the Abuja have been invited to take part in the growth of sports, as the Federal Capital Territory Sports Department opens its sports associations to new members.
The FCT Director of Sports, Luka Istifanus, made this known during a press conference in Abuja, saying the move is aimed at strengthening sports development across the territory.
He explained that membership forms are now available and free for residents, but applicants will go through a proper screening and vetting process.
Istifanus said the initiative began under the immediate past Mandate Secretary for Youth and Sports Development, Lawan Geidam, and noted that the associations had operated under a caretaker committee for over three years with limited powers.
“We are here to kickstart a process introduced by the immediate past Mandate Secretary of Youth and Sports Development, Lawan Geidam,” he said.
He said with approvals now secured, residents and stakeholders can pick up membership and nomination forms at the FCT Sports Department in Area 3, Garki, from April 1 to April 30, and the forms are free.
Istifanus also recalled a period when FCT sports recorded strong results, and he said recent performances at events such as the National Youth Games and zonal competitions show steady progress.
“What remains is to build on the progress recorded so far by creating the right environment for newly elected boards to thrive. This means putting competent and committed individuals in charge of each association,” he stated.
The Director added that the goal is to match or improve on past achievements, and therefore encouraged residents to apply in any sport of their choice if they have at least a First School Leaving Certificate.
He explained that successful applicants will serve a four year term after inauguration, and he urged sports enthusiasts, including sports writers, to take part in the process.
Also speaking, the Deputy Director of Technical Services, Dr Esther Whoba, called on philanthropists to support sports development in the FCT, adding that their involvement will help young athletes grow.
“We encourage sports lovers, especially credible philanthropists to pick forms and join the association to encourage the growth and development of sports across the FCT,” she said.
She added that support through funding or mentorship will help improve facilities and create more chances for athletes to succeed at different levels.
Dr Whoba further explained that active participation by stakeholders will help build a strong sports system that promotes unity, healthy living, and youth development across the territory.
Other officials present at the event included Iyiola Ogundele, Deputy Director of Sports Development, and Dr Charles Agadu, Deputy Director of Medical.
