A new European club record has been set by Victor Boniface, Nathan Tella, and his teammates from Bayer Leverkusen.

In Thursday’s second leg of the Europa League quarterfinals, the recently crowned Bundesliga champions tied West Ham 1-1 with a late goal.

The Hammers’ first goal was cancelled out in the 89th minute by Jeremie Frimpong’s equalization.

Leverkusen scale through to the semi-finals 3-1 on aggregate and maintained their unbeaten run.

Boniface and Tella were in action for Xabi Alonso’s men.

The draw means Leverkusen are unbeaten in 44 consecutive matches in all competitions (38 wins, six draws).

They have now set a new record for a team in the big-five European leagues; the previous record holder was Juventus with 43 games from May 2011 to May 2012.

Bochum were the last team to beat Bayer, on the final day of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season – 328 days ago.

Alonso’s team have racked up 124 goals this season, only failing to score once in 44 competitive fixtures.

All eight of Leverkusen’s goals in the Europa League knockout rounds this term have come after the 70th minute.

Leverkusen are in the running for the German Cup and the Europa League.

They will take on Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final in May.
