Maitama Model Secondary School Holds 26th Inter-house Sports Competition

The relevance of sports in education was brought to the fore at the 26th Inter-house Sports Competition of Maitama Model School as students put up a brilliant display of skills and sportsmanship.
Taking inspiration from great philosophers, Plato and Aristotle who viewed sport as a key component of education and by extension human flourishing Representative of the chairman of the occasion and Director LPG, AYM Shafa Holdings, Mrs Titilayo Dada underscored the importance of sports to humanity.
She commended the teachers for imparting all round knowledge in the students and to the students she said in sports it is a win win for all.
“We are all winners today, no one is a loser,” she said. “Sports is an integral part of our educational curriculum that develops our physical, mental and social well-being. It also promotes discipline and teamwork.”
In her welcome address, Principal of Maitama Model Secondary School, Dr Judith Olure said the event underscores the vital role sports plays in instilling and sustaining values such as teamwork, discipline, perseverance and respect for one another among the students.
These values she said are essential in moulding the young students into “well-rounded individuals” who are equipped to brave it through the rigours of everyday life as well as fostering unity within their communities and the nation as a whole.
“Regardless of which house we belong to, today we stand united as a community, just as the school motto is ‘United We Stand’. Let us cheer for one another, celebrate every achievement, and show respect to our competitors. Let this 26th Inter-house sports competition not only showcase athletic excellence but also strengthen the bonds within our school community.”
Dr Olure expressed appreciation to the Barr. Nyesom Wike led FCT Administration for providing the right atmosphere for education to thrive in the territory.
Goodwill messages were also delivered by school administrators and other well wishers which include the representative of the Etsu Nbawaha (Gishiri village) Abuja, management of Gadol Finance Company Limited among others.
The Director, FCT Department of School Sports, Malam Hashimu Adamu and other FCT officials as well as parents were also on hand to witness the occasion.
At the end of the keenly contested events, Red house emerged overall best with 360 points while Green and Blue houses came second and third with 322 and 320 points respectively.
Yellow house however got a consolation by clinching the first position in the march pass.
In team sports, Blue house won the girl’s basketball trophy while in football, Red house took the girl’s prize and the boy’s went to Blue house.
Other high points include the invitation relay where GSS Tudun Wada Zone 4 won the girl’s race and Army Day Secondary School Maitama bagged the boy’s race. To add colour to the event there was also a principal’s race which featured visiting principal’s from other schools.
Traditional dance from different parts of the country served to add to the fun-filled atmosphere.
