The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has denied reports that men’s national team head coach Walid Regragui has resigned.
Rumours spread on Friday that the 50-year-old coach had stepped down just four months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and this followed Morocco’s loss to Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The defeat came on home soil and raised questions about the future of the Atlas Lions coach.
However, the federation moved quickly to address the claims and released a statement on social media later on Friday.
“The Royal Moroccan Football Federation categorically denies the information relayed by certain media outlets concerning the alleged resignation of the national coach, Mr. Walid Regragui, from his position,” the statement reads.
This implies that Regragui will remain in charge of the national team for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, and he is expected to complete his contract that runs until July 31.
The former Wydad AC coach has enjoyed a strong spell with the national side, and led Morocco to a historic semi final finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the best result by any African team at the tournament.
Morocco also impressed in qualification for the 2026 World Cup, as they won all eight matches and finished top of Group E.
The federation is yet to decide if Regragui will be offered a new contract, and that decision is likely to depend on how the team performs at the World Cup.
Morocco has been drawn in Group C, where they will face Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.
