Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Hopes Dented After Shock Zimbabwe Draw

The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered another setback in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign after being held to a 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe on Tuesday, despite Victor Osimhen’s second-half opener. The result leaves Nigeria struggling in Group C, with their dreams of reaching the global tournament hanging in the balance.
Fresh off a 2-0 victory over Rwanda on Friday in Eric Chelle’s debut as head coach, Nigeria looked to build momentum against Zimbabwe. However, despite dominating possession and creating chances, the Super Eagles were repeatedly denied by Zimbabwe’s resilient goalkeeper, Washington Arubi.
Napoli striker Victor Osimhen finally broke the deadlock in the 74th minute with a powerful header, raising hopes of a crucial home win. But in a dramatic twist, Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa snatched a 90th-minute equalizer, poking the ball past Stanley Nwabali to stun the Nigerian fans in Uyo.
The draw leaves Nigeria third in Group C with just five points from four matches—six behind leaders South Africa and two adrift of second-placed Benin. With only four qualifiers remaining, the Super Eagles now face an uphill battle to secure automatic qualification, as only the group winner advances directly to the 2026 World Cup.
Finishing second—which earns a playoff spot—now appears to be Nigeria’s most realistic path, but even that will require a strong finish, including crucial clashes against South Africa and Benin.
For now, frustration is growing among Nigerian supporters, who expected a stronger response after the team’s disappointing run in the qualifiers.
While new coach Eric Chelle has shown glimpses of progress, the inability to close out games—like the late collapse against Zimbabwe—has raised concerns about the team’s mentality.
For now, the message is clear: Nigeria must wake up—and fast—or risk another painful World Cup absence.
