Senegal and hosts Morocco have secured their places in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 after winning their respective quarter-final matches on Friday.
Senegal edged past Mali 1 0 in a tense West African derby at the Grand Stade de Tanger, and the narrow scoreline reflected a match that was tight, physical, and fiercely contested from start to finish.
The defending champions took the lead in the 27th minute when Iliman Ndiaye reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box and finished calmly after a mistake by Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra. That goal proved to be the difference on the night.
Mali’s hopes of getting back suffered a major blow just before the break when captain Yves Bissouma was sent off in added time at the end of the first half after receiving a second yellow card.
Despite the setback, Mali stayed organised and showed plenty of fight under coach Tom Saintfiet. They defended deeply and tried to find a way back into the match, while Diarra made several fine saves to deny Senegal a second goal.
For Senegal, they kept their shape and controlled possession after the restart, and showed maturity in the closing stages to see out the win. Mali bowed out of the tournament with pride after a brave performance.
Senegal will now face the winner of the quarter final between record champions Egypt and holders Cote D Ivoire on Saturday.
In the second quarter final of the day, hosts Morocco thrilled their home fans with a commanding 2 0 victory over Cameroon in Rabat.
Goals from Brahim Diaz in the first half and Ismail Saibari after the break sealed a memorable win for the Atlas Lions in front of a sold out Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Morocco came into the match under pressure after an unconvincing Round of 16 win over Tanzania, but they responded with energy and confidence. Driven by the home crowd, they played with intensity and control throughout the contest
The win was also historic for Morocco, as it ended a long run without a victory over Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations. It was only their third victory over the Indomitable Lions in 13 meetings across all competitions.
Morocco will face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Nigeria and Algeria as they continue their push for continental glory on home soil.
