SUPER EAGLES EDGE LESOTHO TO KEEP WORLD CUP DREAM ALIVE

Nigeria claimed a hard-fought 2-1 win over Lesotho in their 2026 World Cup African Qualifiers Group C match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa, on Friday.
The Super Eagles earned all three points even though the hosts scored late in the game.
After a quiet first half, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when William Troost-Ekong calmly scored from the penalty spot to put the visitors ahead. The goal lifted their confidence, and they began to control the match.
Their dominance paid off in the 80th minute as Akor Adams found the back of the net to make it 2-0. At that point, Nigeria looked in control and seemed certain of victory.
But Lesotho refused to give up. Hlompho Kalake pulled one back in the 83rd minute to give the home side hope and set up a tense finish. The hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but the Super Eagles stayed firm and held on until the final whistle.
The match was cagey for long periods as both teams struggled to create clear chances until the second half. However, Nigeria’s better control and sharp finishing made the difference.
With this result, the three-time African champions remain in contention for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. They will now face Benin on Tuesday in their final group game, hoping to secure qualification and continue their journey to the World Cup.
