Nigeria opened their search for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title with a hard-earned victory over Tanzania in rainy conditions in Fes.
The Super Eagles took control early and played with confidence, and their pressure paid off in the 36th minute. Defender Semi Ajayi rose well to glance a header into the net from a fine right-wing cross by Alex Iwobi, and Nigeria went into the lead.
Nigeria stayed on top for the rest of the first half and pushed for a second goal. Samuel Chukwueze came close just before the break, but his deflected shot was tipped over the bar by Tanzania goalkeeper Zuberi Foba, and the score stayed the same at halftime.
Tanzania came out stronger after the restart and found a quick response. In the 50th minute, Charles M’Mombwa calmly side-footed the ball into the net after meeting a lofted left-wing delivery from Novatus Miroshi, and the game was level again.
However, Nigeria replied almost immediately and showed its quality. Just two minutes later, Ademola Lookman picked up the ball, shifted it from his right foot to his left, and fired a powerful shot into the top right corner. and That goal proved decisive for Eric Chelle’s side.
Nigeria managed the game well for the rest of the match and held on for all three points, and the win gives them a strong start in Group C.
The Super Eagles will now aim to secure early qualification for the round of 16 when they face Tunisia in Fes on Saturday. Tanzania, on the other hand, will travel to Rabat to take on Uganda in an all-East Africa clash.
