Captain Rashidat Ajibade scored twice in the first half as the Super Falcons of Nigeria defeated the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon 2-0 in an international friendly match played on Tuesday, June 2, at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The match was originally scheduled as a two-legged encounter between the two African powerhouses, but was reduced to a single game due to logistical challenges and scheduling conflicts. It served as part of both teams’ preparations for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will be held in Morocco from July 5 to 26.

Nigeria started the game with intensity and took control early on, pressing high and forcing the Cameroonian defence into errors. The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Ajibade was brought down inside the box after a driving run. The referee pointed to the spot, and the 24-year-old forward confidently converted the penalty to give Nigeria the lead.

Ajibade, who currently plays for Bay FC in the United States after her stint with Atlético Madrid, doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 43rd minute. Winger Omorinsola Babajide, making one of her brightest appearances for the national team, delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the box, which Ajibade calmly slotted past the Cameroonian goalkeeper to complete her brace.

The Super Falcons, led by interim coach Justin Madugu, continued to press in the second half, looking to extend their lead. However, the Cameroonian side, coached by Jean-Baptiste Bisseck, regrouped defensively and created a few opportunities of their own, testing Nigeria’s backline. Despite their efforts, they could not find a way past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who commanded her area with confidence.

The game was notable for its high tempo and physicality, reflecting the long-standing rivalry between the two nations. Both Nigeria and Cameroon have a rich history in African women’s football, with Nigeria having won a record 11 WAFCON titles, while Cameroon are three-time finalists.

The result is a boost to the Super Falcons’ confidence as they continue their preparations for WAFCON 2024, where they will aim to reclaim the title, they lost to South Africa in the 2022 edition. The team has been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, debutants Botswana, and DR Congo.

Ajibade’s performance once again highlighted her importance to the team, not just as captain but also as a consistent goal threat. With her leadership and the emergence of new talents like Babajide, Nigeria will go into the continental tournament as one of the strong favourites.

The friendly also gave coach Madugu a chance to assess his squad depth and test tactical formations ahead of the tournament. Although the match was played behind closed doors, the energy and determination shown by the Super Falcons sent a strong message to their continental rivals.

The Super Falcons are expected to continue their training camp in Nigeria before heading to Morocco for the final phase of preparations.
