Nigeria’s Super Falcons began their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a confident 3–0 victory over Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday, July 6, showing exactly why they remain the most successful team on the continent.

The nine-time champions got off to the perfect start, as Asisat Oshoala found the back of the net in just the 4th minute. She pounced on a well-placed cross and finished neatly, setting the tone for what would become a dominant display. With captain Rasheedat Ajibade pulling the strings in midfield, and the duo of Deborah Abiodun and Toni Payne adding energy and flair, Nigeria kept Tunisia pinned in their own half for much of the first period.

Their pressure paid off again just before the break when Anam Imo Babajide put the ball in the net. Though the referee initially disallowed the goal for an apparent foul by Oshoala in the build-up, a VAR review in added time told a different story. After a careful check, the decision was overturned and the goal stood, giving the Super Falcons a deserved 2–0 lead going into half-time.

After the restart, coach Justin Madugu made key substitutions, introducing Christy Ucheibe, Esther Okoronkwo, and Chinwendu Ihezuo to inject more pace and freshness. The team continued to press forward, and their third goal came in the 84th minute when Ihezuo calmly slotted a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner. The goal was the result of a neat build-up involving Michelle Alozie and Ucheibe, and it sealed the win in style.

Tunisia barely threatened throughout the match, as Nigeria’s defence remained organised and disciplined. Osinachi Ohale and Oluwatosin Demehin formed a solid partnership at the back, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was hardly troubled, comfortably dealing with the few shots that came her way.

Although Nigeria missed several clear chances to increase their tally, the final result reflected their dominance. With a balance of attacking flair and defensive control, the Super Falcons have made a strong statement in Group B, as they continue their quest for a record-extending tenth WAFCON title.
