COEASU ZUBA GETS NEW LEADERSHIP, CHAIRMAN VOWS TO PRIORITISE MEMBERS’ WELFARE

The College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), FCT College of Education, Zuba-Abuja, has inaugurated a new executive council, with the newly elected Chairman, Dr. Maren Stephen, pledging to prioritise members’ welfare and promote unity within the union.
Speaking at the inauguration held on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, at the College Mini Campus, the Provost of the College, Dr. Sule Mundi, represented by the Deputy Provost (Administration), Dr. Mrs. Adegbemisola Olotu, urged the new executives to be proactive and work closely with Management for the overall development of the institution.
Dr. Olotu emphasised that members’ welfare remains a major responsibility of the union, urging the new leadership to make it a priority throughout its tenure.
She also called for a strong and cordial relationship between COEASU and College Management, noting that the progress of the institution depends on collective efforts and cooperation among all stakeholders.
The Deputy Provost commended members for their participation in the election and appreciated the Electoral Committee for conducting a successful exercise. She also recognised the outgoing executives for their cooperation with Management, which she said contributed to the achievement of common goals.
In his farewell remarks, the outgoing COEASU Chairman, Dr. Sa’ad Ibrahim, described leadership as a responsibility based on service, sacrifice and commitment to the collective interest rather than the mere occupation of a position.
Reflecting on his administration, Dr. Ibrahim said the union experienced challenges, recorded achievements and gained valuable lessons. He therefore urged the new executives to build on the foundation laid by the outgoing administration.
“Preserve what is good, improve what needs improvement and introduce new ideas that will move the union forward,” he advised.
Dr. Ibrahim also appealed to members to extend the same support given to the outgoing leadership to the new executives, stressing that effective leadership requires cooperation between leaders and members.
In his inaugural speech, the new COEASU Chairman, Dr. Maren Stephen, said his administration had a clear mandate to protect members’ welfare, advance the cause of teacher education and build a stronger, united and progressive union.
He pledged to lead with integrity, fairness and a strong commitment to academic excellence. He also urged members to discharge their responsibilities diligently and avoid taking undue advantage of the students entrusted to their care.
“Our vision is a COEASU that is respected, united and proactive; a union that speaks the truth with one voice,” he said.
Dr. Stephen assured members that while his administration would remain committed to protecting their rights and interests, it would prioritise dialogue and negotiation with Government, stakeholders and College Management in resolving issues.
