FALCONETS’ WORLD CUP EXIT CUTS SHORT THREAD OF HOPE FOR NIGERIAN FOOTBALL

What appeared to be a thread of hope for Nigerian football has been cut as the Falconets were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a 1 – 0 quarter-final defeat to Colombia in Lodz, Poland, on Sunday.

Nigeria were seconds away from taking the contest into extra time when Valerin Loboa struck in the second minute of stoppage time to send Colombia into the semi-finals and end the Falconets’ hopes of reaching the last four.

The defeat came after a closely contested encounter in which neither side was able to find the breakthrough for long periods. Nigeria created opportunities, including a first-half effort from Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei that hit the crossbar, while goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo also denied Tumininu Adeshina from distance.

Nigeria’s task became harder in the 77th minute when Kafayat Mafisere was shown a straight red card, with the decision subsequently confirmed by the Video Assistant Referee. The Falconets were therefore forced to defend with 10 players for the closing stages.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Nigeria held on and continued to look for a way forward. Colombia eventually found the opening when Loboa converted in the 92nd minute, settling a match that had appeared destined for extra time.

The result brings an end to a campaign that had offered some encouraging moments for Nigerian football. The Falconets produced a commanding 3 – 0 victory over England in the Round of 16, with Tosin Rafiu, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu scoring to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

Nigeria had also produced one of the biggest scorelines of the tournament in the group stage, defeating New Caledonia 10 – 1 to advance to the knockout rounds.

The quarter-final exit means the Falconets will have to wait again for another opportunity to reach the semi-finals. Nigeria have twice finished as runners-up at the U-20 Women’s World Cup.

For Nigerian football that has endured disappointments across several levels in recent times, the Falconets had provided a reason to watch with renewed expectation. This defeat means that hope now gives way to another early exit, even after a campaign that had promised more.
