HEALTH, SECURITY TAKE CENTRE STAGE AS FCT EXCO APPROVES KEY INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

The Federal Capital Territory Executive Council (FCT EXCO) has approved major infrastructure projects in healthcare and security.
They include the completion of the long-abandoned Utako General Hospital, a comprehensive overhaul of all 14 existing general hospitals, and the construction of a new Divisional Police Station at the Wasa Informal Sector.
The approvals were finalized on Tuesday, 29 September, 2026, during the 19th FCT EXCO meeting presided over by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, at Life Camp, Abuja.
Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the Mandate Secretary for the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, announced that the Minister directed the immediate award of contracts for the rehabilitation, upgrade, and equipping of all general hospitals across the territory.
Dr. Fasawe stated that the healthcare overhaul will cover the procurement of advanced diagnostic tools, modern operating theatre equipment, and X-ray machines.
She added that work will resume immediately at the Utako General Hospital to ensure its complete construction, equipping, and deployment of medical staff.
According to Dr. Fasawe, the FCT Administration has also maintained consistent payments to Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) for premium and capitation obligations under the health insurance scheme.
She emphasized that revamping primary and secondary health centers across the six Area Councils will ensure quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare while easing the burden on tertiary medical centers.
Addressing security matters, the Director of the FCTA Security Services Department, Adamu Gwary, revealed that EXCO approved a fresh contract for a new Divisional Police Station at the Wasa Informal Sector, given a strict six-month delivery timeline.
He added that the facility is designed to secure the zone ahead of the upcoming relocation of Apo mechanics and artisans.
Gwary explained that the Wasa project fulfills a commitment made by the Minister in July during commissioning of the site’s initial infrastructure.
The Director noted that the project aligns with the administration’s broader security initiative launched in December to establish two fully equipped divisional police offices in each of the six Area Councils.
Updating reporters on the initiative, Gwary disclosed that construction across multiple sites has reached advanced stages, with the Department of Public Building taking delivery of two fully completed and furnished divisional stations at Ushafa and Saburi.
According to him, each complex features an administrative building and fully furnished six-man staff quarters designed to combat crime in rural and developing areas. He added that Minister Wike is scheduled to conduct inspection visits to the completed facilities in the coming days.
