It was quite a thrilling and fruitful outing for the FCT at the just concluded Under 12/15 Handball Championship held in Sokoto as both the boys and girls under 12 teams all took second positions at the tournament.

The icing on the cake was the achievements of the duo of Amaka Ogbonna and Shedrach Peter who won the Highest Goal Scorer (girls) and Most Valuable Player (boys) awards respectively all in the Under 12 categories.

Speaking while receiving the trophies won, Acting Director FCT Sports, Luka Istifanus who lauded the team for going all out and coming back with laurels, said he had never been in doubt of the outcome of the outing because handball is one sport in which the FCT has always excelled.

He pointed out that even at short notice and hasty preparations the team was not deterred which shows the passion and fighting spirit of the young athletes adding that the future for them is “bright and clear”.

“I am very proud of what these young boys and girls have been able to achieve by coming second out of the thirty-six states and FCT. This shows that they are very serious and focused on what they do. I will like to urge them to redouble their efforts as we are soon going to start the zonal eliminations for the National Sports Festival. On our own part as administrators we will make sure we give them all the needed support so as to motivate them the more,” he said.

Team Secretary and leader of the contingent to Sokoto, Hulda Nkwocha said although working with children is quite difficult due to their unpredictable nature, she took the task of working with the young teams as a personal challenge and was therefore glad that the team did not break the FCT tradition of doing well in handball.

She was also full of praises for the youngsters, their parents, and guardians whom she says have been “very understanding” in matters concerning their wards.

The teams’ placing at the championship has qualified them to take part in 2 International competitions- the Partille cup in Sweden and the Dronneglund cup in Denmark.
