Youths in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) have been admonished to be their own boss by getting a skill for self-sufficiency.

Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, gave this advice, while flagging off the first phase of his empowerment programme for 700 youths at the Apo Resettlement Area in Abuja, Thursday.

He said: “The Best thing is to be your own boss; most of you prefer government jobs but government cannot take everyone. Don’t wait for salary, don’t rely on government; you can get your money on a daily basis, without having to wait for monthly salary.”

Maikalangu stressed: “if you get ₦1000 every day for tailoring, barbing or washing cars, that’s ₦30000 in one month, and there is no way you can get only ₦1000 in a day”.

According to him, empowerment equipment such as barbing clippers, generating sets, hair driers, cooking utensils and sewing machines would be bought for the beneficiaries after successful training.

His word: “After the training, we are going to buy you equipment. Gone are the days when we provide these and we find them in the market. We will give to those who truly deserve it.”

Abuja Digest reports that while 100 youths were selected for the first phase of the programme, not less than ₦35 million has been earmarked for the programme, which targets about 700 youths across the Council.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to Abuja Digest, expressed appreciation for the skills acquisition programme; promising to make the best out of the gesture.
