Wuse General Hospital has achieved a significant milestone in medical education and healthcare service delivery, scoring an impressive 4.1 out of 5 in the recent Family Medicine accreditation exercise conducted by the West African College of Physicians (WACP). The hospital has now secured a five-year accreditation to train 14 resident doctors and seven senior resident doctors, totaling 21 trainees.

The accreditation team was received during the week by the Director-General Hospital Management Board (HMB), Dr. Olugbenga Bello, who commended the team for their professionalism and dedication.

During the debriefing, Dr. Bello expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the visit and reiterated the board’s commitment to addressing the recommendations highlighted by the team.

He acknowledged the challenge of limited office space and assured that the board was already exploring possible expansion options to accommodate the growing needs of the hospital.

On the matter of human resources, Dr. Bello noted that the FCT Minister has recently approved a broader recruitment scope, allowing the board to source resident doctors not just from within the system but also from external pools, thereby increasing staffing capacity.

As part of innovative measures to ease the space constraints, Dr. Bello announced plans to introduce afternoon clinics, which will help decongest the hospital during peak hours and improve patient flow.

The WACP team praised the DG and hospital leadership for the warm reception and the ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery. They acknowledged the hospital’s large catchment population and high patient turnout but emphasized the need for further investment in infrastructure and human capital.

Present at the debriefing were top management officials from both the Hospital Management Board and Wuse General Hospital.

Dr. Bello concluded by assuring the accreditation team that by the next review in five years, Wuse General Hospital would have significantly surpassed its current standards, positioning itself as a premier center for Family Medicine training in the region.
