10-MAN ARSENAL FIND FINISHING CLASS TO EDGE WOLVES AT MOLINEUX
Arsenal remain six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool after sub Riccardo Calafiori came off the bench to fire a superb winner in a merited 1-0 victory at relegation-haunted Wolves.
Mikel Arteta’s side were rocked when Myles Lewis-Skelly was controversially sent off for a late challenge on Matt Doherty two minutes before half-time with a straight red card.
But the visiting side dominated the second period at Molineux and grabbed the lead via the finishing quality of former Bologna left-back Calafiori after Joao Gomes was red carded for a second booking with a cynical foul on Jurriën Timber on 70 minutes.
With the numbers evened up, Calafiori punished a poor headed clearance by Nelson Semedo to rifle a half-volley low into the corner of the home net.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya enjoyed a confident display for the visitors, who have played one game more than Arne Slot’s league leaders.
But it was another bitter afternoon for Wolves in slumping to a fourth straight defeat. They remain just outside the relegation zone on goal difference from Ipswich, who lost 4-1 at Liverpool.
REDS DOWN IPSWICH WITH EASE
Cody Gakpo scored twice and Dominic Szoboszlai and Mo Salah were also on target as Liverpool cruised to victory over Ipswich.
The only surprise was that the margin of victory did not surpass Manchester City’s 6-0 victory over Kieran McKenna’s side last week, with the Suffolk strugglers looking devoid of any confidence.
For much of the game, Liverpool’s whole side were in the Ipswich third of the field dictating play, with the visitors camped on the edge of their box.
Szoboszlai’s early fine strike from 20 yards prevented any frustration building for the home side and then Salah netted his customary goal shooting high into the net from close range. Gakpo added two poachers goals, one following up a goalkeeper save and then a header from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross for the only goal of the second half, before Jacob Greaves’ late consolation.
The win sees Liverpool retain their six-point lead, with a game in hand, at the top of the table. Ipswich’s goal difference, which has them in the bottom three behind Wolves, took another hit this afternoon.
MAN CITY FIGHT BACK TO REPLACE CHELSEA IN TOP FOUR
Second-half goals from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden helped Manchester City to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea, as they replaced the Blues in the Premier League’s top four.
Noni Madueke punished a glaring error from City debutant Abdukodir Khusanov early on as Chelsea looked to move five points clear of a rival for UEFA Champions League qualification.
However, City began to exert control towards the end of an action-packed first half, and Josko Gvardiol’s sixth league goal of the season dragged them level.
In the second half, Haaland latched on to Ederson’s long ball and lobbed an out-of-position Robert Sanchez to put City ahead, then Foden raced clear to make the points safe in the 88th minute.
The victory takes City up to fourth in the table on 41 points, ahead of fifth-placed Newcastle United on goal difference and one clear of Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth.
