Southampton has made unwanted history by suffering the earliest relegation in Premier League history. The club’s 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday confirmed their drop to the Championship with seven games still remaining.

The result leaves Southampton with only 10 points after 31 games, sitting at the bottom of the table and 22 points away from safety. No team has ever been relegated this early in the Premier League era.

The club, who returned to the top flight just last season, had needed a win to stay alive in the battle for survival. But after Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Ipswich Town on Saturday to move up to 32 points, Southampton’s chances became even slimmer.

“We knew it was probably going to be inevitable at some point. We have not been good enough all season. It is a sad day and one that this group of players will learn from,” said goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

He added that the team needs wins, points, and strong performances to bring joy back to the fans and build momentum for next season in the Championship.

Southampton showed early promise in the match. In the 12th minute, Tyler Dibling sent in a cross to Kamaldeen Sulemana, who almost scored but hit the post. However, Tottenham responded right away. Just one minute later, Djed Spence cut the ball back to Brennan Johnson, who smashed it into the roof of the net.

The win moved Spurs up to 13th place in the standings with 37 points, while Southampton are left to prepare for life in the second tier after a historically early exit.
