President Bola Tinubu has declared that Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has firmly established itself as Nigeria’s primary gateway for international investment and a growing hub for global retail.

The President made this declaration through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, who represented him at the formal signing of a landmark partnership between Hypercity and Carrefour at the Abuja Transcorp Hilton Hotel on Tuesday, 14 April, 2026.

He emphasized that the city’s role underscores Nigeria’s position as the continent’s leading destination for enterprise.

Praising efforts of the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, the President described him as a “deep thinker” whose business-oriented governance approach has been instrumental in reshaping Abuja’s economic and physical landscape.

President Tinubu credited Wike’s leadership for facilitating the Hypercity-Carrefour deal, adding that it signals a new phase of retail expansion in Nigeria.

“Under the current leadership, Abuja is sowing the seed for a retail revolution that will extend beyond the city’s borders,” he said.

He disclosed that the partnership is designed to grow into a “tree with many branches” across the nation, reinforcing Nigeria as a stable home for long-term international collaboration.

In his remarks, Hypercity Supermarket’s Managing Director, Sunny Chawla, revealed that the partnership is expected to drive significant investment, industrial growth, and job creation.

This is as he announced plans to open new stores in Abuja and other major Nigerian cities, with the aim to modernize the retail sector, while empowering local suppliers.

Chawla said: “This is not a finish line but a beginning. We are building a world-class retail ecosystem that combines global excellence with Nigerian ambition, delivering quality products and modern shopping experiences to families nationwide.”
