FCTA Donates Relief Materials To Flood Victims in Kwali

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has donated relief materials to 180 victims of flood in Yangoji and Shapi communities in Kwali Area Council of the Territory.

The donations was made in Yangoji village, Kwali Area Council, Wednesday, following a needs assessment carried out by Relief and Rehabilitation Department of the FCT- Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after a flood disaster that affected several houses and properties.

Permanent Secretary, FCT, Mr. Olusade Adesola, while making a symbolic presentation of the materials to some of the victims empathized with the communities affected and called on them to be adhere to FEMA’s warnings, especially concerning building and farming on flood plains.

Adesola, while calling on the beneficiaries of the donations to put the materials to good use, enjoined the Area Council leadership to create local emergency committee, which can serve as first responders in any case of emergencies.

The Permanent Secretary assured the communities of the Federal Government’s plans to alleviate their plights by providing palliatives as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy.

His words: “Government is also looking towards a bigger relief and support to citizens, arising from the removal of the fuel subsidy, so I want to assure you that the Governor-General of the FCT, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is really concerned on your plight”.

Meanwhile, the Director-General FEMA, Dr. Idriss Abbas, who sympathized with those affected by the flood, called on the community to take precautions as they carry out economic activities, like farming.

The DG appealed to the residents to adhere to environmental rules and regulations by ensuring that farmlands and houses on waterways are relocated to safer zones in the communities as well as adhere to early warning signs.

He revealed that the items being donated are food and non-food items, and assured that all those affected have been documented and will receive their packages accordingly.

Speaking earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, Kwali Area Council, Mr. Danladi Chiya, appreciated the FCT Administration for donating the relief materials; noting that the materials will go a long way in assuaging the plights of residents who lost their properties as a result of the flood.

He however, appealed to the FCT Administration to come to the aid of the Area Council, which has been plagued by insecurity, by providing more security apparatus to protect lives and properties.

One of the beneficiaries, a Mother of three, Dinatu Daniel, appreciated the generosity of the Administration, adding that her family will be hugely relieved by the materials she has received.
