Following credible intelligence, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has raided and closed down some illegal motor parks across the Federal Capital City,

The authorities have also carried out raids against some unauthorised taxi ranks in Abuja to flush out criminals who usually hibernate around such areas for their nefarious activities.

Secretary, Command and Control Centre, FCTA, Peter Olumuji, who led the exercise on Wednesday, told journalists that the clampdown was to tackle cases of insecurity in parts of the Territory, mostly arising from activities of pickpockets, one-chance and drug peddlers, among other criminalities.

Disclosing that his team “acted on credible intelligence from relevant security and paramilitary agencies”, Olumuji added that the operation “dislodged activities of one-chance syndicates who usually use unpainted taxes and operate in illegal locations across the FCT”.

His words: “The enforcement team is all out to ensure that we raid any location that harbours indiscriminate parking, as we have been receiving reports about one chance, and the security agencies with us have been giving us credible intelligence on this issue. That is why we have to go round the city and dislodge these unapproved parking zones.”

Olumuji stated that beggars were also been used as a source of information gathering by criminal elements who use the information to attack and rob unsuspecting residents within the city centre.

The operation which took place in different areas around the city, including Bannex junction and Federal Secretariat, also carried out clean up exercise of the environment of nuisances and shanties hitherto allegedly used by hoodlums who attack unsuspecting pedestrians at nights

Similarly, Deputy Director, Operations, Directorate of Road Traffic Service, Deborah Osho, disclosed that the team impounded no fewer than 15 vehicles from different locations within the city centre, for varying traffic rule violations, including road unworthiness, expiration of documents and driving without license .

She stressed that, apart from insecurity, most of the illegal parks constitute serious traffic obstructions in the city, as the operators occupy major road corridors and pedestrian ways, forcing other road users to slow down.

“This is why we are clamping down on them. We want them to move into approved taxi ranks for their operations in the city and free up our roads”, she said.
