In a renewed effort to improve staff welfare and wellbeing for greater productivity, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) organized a two day free medical outreach for staff of the FCTA and the Federal Capital Development Agency (FCDA) in commemoration of the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration.
The two day outreach, organized by the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), took place at the FCTA Secretariat Car Park from 6th to 7th May, 2026, where over 700 civil servants received various free healthcare services, while 500 reading glasses were distributed to beneficiaries.
While flagging off the outreach, the Head of Civil Service (FCTA), Mrs. Nancy Sabanti Nathan, restated the Administration’s commitment under the leadership of the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, and the Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmud, to staff welfare and wellbeing in appreciation of their service and dedication to the development of the Federal Capital Territory.
In her words, “The FCTA Medical Outreach today reflects our commitment to your health and welfare by providing essential check-ups, screenings, and care that will help you continue delivering quality service.”
The Head of Service also urged staff to give attention to their health through regular medical check ups, exercise, and healthy lifestyle habits, as discussed during the health talks delivered by resource persons.
In her remarks, the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, said the FCT Administration remains committed to the health and well-being of civil servants whose dedication and hard work continue to support the growth and development of the Federal Capital Territory.
Dr. Fasawe stated that “a healthy workforce remains the foundation of effective service delivery, productivity, and national development, which proves that health is the new wealth. HSES has therefore been given the responsibility of improving access to quality healthcare services and ensuring that healthcare personnel are properly trained and equipped to serve the people effectively.”
According to her, the two-day medical outreach was aimed at promoting awareness, prevention, early detection, and proper management of non communicable diseases.
She explained that the outreach offered free medical consultations, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, eye screening, X ray services, free reading glasses, and medications for known patients.
The Mandate Secretary also expressed concern over the growing number of people who avoid routine medical checks until complications arise, especially in cases of Hypertension and Diabetes, commonly referred to as “silent killer diseases” because they often develop without noticeable symptoms. She stressed the need for regular medical check ups for early detection and proper management.
Dr. Fasawe further urged civil servants to take advantage of the presence of the FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS) by enrolling in the scheme to access affordable and quality healthcare services for themselves and their families across accredited health facilities of their choice.
Also speaking at the event, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women’s Health, Dr. Adanna Steinacker, commended the leadership of the FCTA for prioritizing the wellbeing of civil servants through the outreach initiative, describing it as people centered governance that is practical, preventive, and responsive.
She added that a healthy workforce is closely linked to national development, noting that the growth of any nation depends greatly on the health and wellbeing of those who keep the machinery of government running.
According to her, “National development is not only determined by infrastructure, policies, and economic growth, but also by the health and wellbeing of those who serve the nation. A healthy workforce is not a luxury but a national asset.”
Equally, the leadership of the FCTA Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), led by the Chairperson, Comrade Rifkatu Iyortyer, passed a vote of confidence on the HSES and the Mandate Secretary for consistently initiating impactful humanitarian programmes that directly improve lives within the FCT, now extended to civil servants.
The union leader stated that JUAC is proud of the efforts of the FCT Administration towards improving staff welfare in line with public service provisions aimed at keeping civil servants motivated, healthy, and efficient.
The outreach, which featured free medical consultations, eye checks, distribution of reading glasses, blood pressure checks, blood sugar rapid tests, X-ray services, FHIS enrollment, and health talks on Hypertension and Diabetes, was well attended by staff across Secretariats, Departments, and Agencies, including management staff of the FCTA.
