CBT story

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Leadership Enhancement and Development Programme (Lead-P) beneficiaries have embarked on a voluntary initiative to equip fellow civil servants with the skills and confidence required to excel in the computer-Based Test (CBT) promotion examinations.

The initiative, coordinated under a platform known as the Elevation Team, brought together scores of FCTA staff for a hands-on CBT training session designed to demystify the examination process, reduce anxiety and improve success rates in promotion examinations.

Speaking at the training held at the Government Secondary School, Garki (GSS), on Thursday, June 11, 2026, the team lead of a seven-member team, Ogechi Daniel-Isiocha of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), a Lead-P beneficiary, said the initiative was inspired by a desire to give back to the FCTA workforce.

She explained that the team deliberately chose to focus on CBT training after identifying a critical gap affecting many officers seeking promotion.

“We looked at the challenges facing staff and discovered that many people needed support in navigating CBT examinations. Some know the answers to questions but become confused once they sit in front of a computer system,” she said.

According to Isiocha, the group has recorded significant participation, with more than 1,000 members already enrolled on its online platform and about 150 officers attending the physical training session.

She emphasised that the training remains largely free, with participants only contributing towards the installation of a CBT practice application developed to simulate examination conditions.

“We are not doing this for profit. Our interest is to see more staff pass their promotion examinations. If vacancies become the issue, that is a different matter, but let it not be because they failed the examination,” she stated.

She noted that the team has been conducting free online tutorials daily between 8:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., in addition to organising physical practical sessions where participants are exposed to CBT software similar to that used during promotion examinations.

Isiocha revealed that the physical training was part of efforts to provide hands-on experience for participants ahead of the upcoming promotion exams for staff of the FCTA scheduled for July, 2026.

A member of the organising team and facilitator, Prince Chika Okafor of the Transportation Secretariat, another beneficiary of the Lead-P programme, explained that the idea was conceived by some beneficiaries who recognised the need to support colleagues struggling with CBT examinations.

“After participating in the Lead-P programme, some of us came together to share the experience and knowledge we gained. We discovered that many staff members were lagging in CBT-related skills, so we decided to help bridge the gap,” he said.

“Our goal is to expose staff to the rudiments of CBT examinations, help them understand what to expect, remove fear and anxiety, and ensure that as many officers as possible pass their promotion examinations with ease,” he added.

As part of the training, participants also benefited from the experiences of promoted officers. One of the guest speakers, Mrs Chinyere Arayi, recently promoted Director at FCT Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), shared practical strategies that contributed to her success during the 2024 promotion exercise.

She advised candidates to adequately prepare for the examinations by studying thoroughly, arriving early at examination centres, ensuring all required documents are readily available, and managing examination time effectively.

Arayi also urged candidates to remain focused during the examinations, avoid distractions, answer familiar questions first before returning to difficult ones, and refrain from bringing mobile phones into examination halls.

Abuja Digest reports that some participants described the training as timely and impactful, expressing optimism that the practical exposure and examination tips would improve their confidence and performance in the forthcoming FCTA promotion examinations scheduled for July.
