The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) came alive in creativity and cultural expression as the Department of Arts and Culture under the Social Development Secretariat (SDS), hosted a unique stage play titled “Kalangu” alongside the NYSC Echoes of Service Art Exhibition.
The event, which brought together corps members, artists, and key stakeholders in the creative industry, served as a vibrant platform to celebrate Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage while showcasing the talents of young Nigerians.
Speaking at the occasion, the Honourable Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described the event as more than just a display of artistic excellence.
Represented by the Special Adviser to the Minister of State on Social Development, Mrs. Helen Zamani, the Minister noted that the initiative reflects a collective commitment to promoting cultural heritage, unity, and national identity.
She commended the FCT Social Development Secretariat for organising what she described as a laudable initiative, highlighting its role in providing corps members with a platform to express their creativity.
“The participation of corps members in arts and cultural activities goes beyond entertainment; it fosters discipline, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation of our diverse cultural heritage,” she stated.
In his welcome address, the Mandate Secretary of the Social Development Secretariat, Hon. Ibrahim Aminu, applauded the artists and performers for their dedication, passion, and courage in expressing themselves through various art forms.
He also acknowledged the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for its continuous efforts in creating platforms that nurture unity among young Nigerians from diverse backgrounds.
According to him, such initiatives align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, stressing that contributions to nation-building extend far beyond primary assignments.
The President of the Society of Nigerian Artists, Mr. Mohammed Suleiman, noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of the FCT Administration to empower young people and harness their potentials for sustainable development.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the FCT Chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), Mr. Jerry Adesewo, praised the organisers for sustaining the relevance of theatre and visual arts in national development. He noted that platforms like “Kalangu” not only preserve Nigeria’s storytelling traditions but also inspire a new generation of performers and creatives to use art as a tool for social change and unity.
Delivering the vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary of the Social Development Secretariat, Ms. Olubunmi Olowookere, commended the corps members for their outstanding performances, describing them as a testament to patriotism, creativity, and unity.
Continuing, the Ms. Olubunmi, thanked the talented cast and crew of the stage play. “You transported us to different worlds, made us laugh, think, and feel. To the visual artists, your works tell stories that policy documents cannot capture. You are the conscience of our society,” she said.
The highlight of the event was the official launch of the art exhibition, where a wide variety of artworks were displayed, reflecting themes of service, unity, and cultural diversity.
The event concluded on a high note, leaving attendees inspired by the power of art in fostering national cohesion and celebrating Nigeria’s rich cultural identity.
