The third edition of the DRTS Table Tennis Championship, organised by the Sports and Recreation Unit, is an annual event created to boost the physical fitness of staff, stimulate the spirit of sportsmanship, and encourage inter-agency participation in various sporting activities.

This year’s event commenced on the 22nd of July 2026, with 30 participants drawn from the various commands and units of the Directorate. After going through the group stages, the numbers were reduced as participants progressed to the final stage of the competition.

In a well-organised grand finale, spectators were thrilled by the athletes’ skillful services and mesmerizing smashes, which stirred the atmosphere with resounding cheers and applause.

The finals began with the 3rd place match between Officer Kubau of PR&E and Mr. Walter of the Maintenance Unit. After 5 rigorous and exciting rounds, Kubau emerged victorious and was awarded a bronze medal.

Speaking during the event, the Director, Dr. Abubakar Yeldu, urged participants to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and accept the outcome of the results. He also encouraged officers to participate in all sporting activities in order to remain physically fit for day-to-day activities, and for effectiveness and productivity.

In the final, Mr. Andrew Akene of the Finance and Accounts Department, a two-time champion and defending title holder who had remained unbeaten since the inception of the tournament in 2024, faced Husseini Badagi of the Gwagwalada Command. Badagi, who was defeated by Andrew in the 2nd edition, returned seeking vengeance. After 7 intense sets, Badagi the underdog, defeated the defending champion to claim the trophy.

Present at the event were senior officers and men, spectators from far and near, sports lovers, and family members.

In his closing remarks, the Director of HRM, Mr. Hilary Kwapyong, who spoke on behalf of the director, congratulated all participants and emphasized the need for more regular recreational activities. He also promised that management would consider introducing a monthly 10-kilometer walk to boost general body fitness.

The event was climaxed with the presentation of certificates of participation and the presentation of the trophy by the Director, HRM.
