UCL: PENALTIES LEAVE ARSENAL AND ATLETICO LEVEL AHEAD OF SECOND LEG

Arsenal and Atletico Madrid played out a 1–1 draw in an intense first leg of their Champions League semifinal, and both sides now head into the return match with everything still to play for.
Arsenal took the lead just before half time when Viktor Gyokeres won a penalty after a challenge from David Hancko and then stepped up to score. It was a calm finish and it gave the visitors a narrow advantage going into the break.
Atletico Madrid came back stronger in the second half and they began to push forward in search of an equaliser. Ademola Lookman tested goalkeeper David Raya, and Gabriel Magalhaes made an important block to stop Antoine Griezmann from scoring.
The pressure paid off when Atletico were awarded a penalty after a VAR review. A shot from Marcos Llorente struck the leg of Ben White and then touched his hand, and the referee pointed to the spot. Julian Alvarez converted the penalty with a powerful strike into the top corner.
The game remained open as Atletico pushed for a second goal and Griezmann hit the crossbar, while Lookman missed a clear chance from close range. Arsenal also had a late moment when substitute Eberechi Eze appeared to win a penalty, but the decision was overturned after another VAR check.
Both teams will now look ahead to the second leg in London next Tuesday, where a place in the final will be decided.
