The FCT girls’ basketball team has been crowned regional champions of the 25th Milo National Secondary School basketball championship after a thrilling tournament in Abuja, earning a place in the national finals later this year in Ibadan. Meanwhile, the FCT boys put up a strong fight but fell just short in the finals, finishing as runners-up to Team Niger.

The FCT girls got off to a flying start with a solid win over Team Kaduna. Day 2 saw them edge past Team Niger before suffering a close four-point loss to Team Benue. They quickly bounced back on Day 3 with a confident win over Team Nasarawa, securing their spot in the knockout stage.

In the semifinals, the girls turned up the heat and swept past Kaduna with a commanding 32-17 victory. They then delivered another strong performance to seal the championship title with victory over Team Niger.

The FCT boys, on the other hand, began their campaign with a win over Team Nasarawa. They stumbled against Team Niger the next day but came back focused, defeating Team Kaduna to close the group stage. In the semifinals, they once again outplayed Kaduna with a 45-32 win. That set up a showdown with Team Niger, where they put up a solid fight but had to settle for second place.

The championship brought together some of the best school teams from across the region. The boys’ competition featured Government Secondary School, Gwarinpa Life Camp (FCT), Father O’Connell Science College, Minna (Niger State), Government Secondary School, Maina (Nasarawa State), and NDA Staff Secondary School, Kaduna.

On the girls’ side, teams came from Government Secondary School, Karu (FCT), Government Secondary School, Gboko (Benue State), Zarumai Model School, Minna (Niger State), NDA Staff Secondary School, Kaduna, and Younik Academy, Lafia (Nasarawa State).

Coaches and officials were full of praise for both FCT teams. The girls impressed with their confidence and consistency, while the boys showed great character and potential.

With the national finals in sight, all eyes are now on the FCT girls preparing to represent the Ibadan region. The boys, too, leave with their heads held high, knowing they have what it takes to go even further next time.
