AEPB, UNIDO TRAINS WASTE WORKERS ON PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT

As part of their efforts to promote sustainable waste management practices in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),
The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), have conducted a one day follow-up training for waste workers on plastic waste handling and management.
The training which took place in Presken Hotel at Jabi, Abuja brought together waste workers and key stakeholders in the environmental sector such as Waste Pickers Association (WAPAN) to enhance their knowledge of plastic waste collection, segregation, recycling, and safe handling practices aimed at improving environmental sustainability and livelihoods.
In her opening remarks, the Director of AEPB, Mrs. Kate Ogbonna, commended the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for its support and partnership with the Board. She noted that the collaboration has significantly contributed to enhancing knowledge, building capacity, and creating awareness on proper waste management practices across the FCT.
The Director also applauded the commitment of waste workers, describing them as critical partners in achieving a cleaner and healthier environment. She expressed optimism for continued collaboration with UNIDO in advancing innovative and sustainable waste management solutions within the FCT.
Speaking at the event, the UNIDO representative and Project Field Coordinator, Mr Charles Uzoma stated that the project, funded by the Government of Japan since 2022, has continued to support sustainable waste management initiatives, including the establishment of a waste collection centre in Jabi.
According to Mr Uzoma, the training was designed to enhance the skills and capacity of waste workers, and contribute to a more sustainable future for communities. The representative appreciated the support and cooperation of AEPB in implementing the project and expressed the organization’s readiness to strengthen its partnership with the Board.
Participants were taken through practical sessions on plastic waste handling, recycling opportunities, occupational safety, and environmental best practices. They were encouraged to apply the knowledge gained in their daily operations to support ongoing efforts to reduce plastic pollution and improve waste management across the FCT.
The training underscores the shared commitment of AEPB, UNIDO, and the Government of Japan to fostering environmental sustainability, promoting a circular economy, and improving the welfare of waste workers through continuous capacity-building initiatives.
