FCTA, POLICE, OTHERS REVIVE OPERATION SWEEP TO TACKLE CRIME AHEAD IMPORTANT EVENTS

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the Nigeria Police, FCT Command, and other security agencies have launched a renewed, indefinite phase of “Operation Sweep,” a comprehensive security initiative targeting criminal networks in the nation’s capital.
Abuja Digest reports that the renewed collaborative effort brings together military, police, intelligence, and paramilitary forces in what authorities describe as a decisive move to reclaim the capital from lawless elements.
FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi, while addressing the joint security team on Friday, 15 April 2026, at Eagle Square, Abuja, stressed that the operation focuses exclusively on criminal actors without regard to ethnic, religious, or cultural affiliations.
“Crime has no tribe, has no religion, and has no culture. It affects each and every one of us,” Sanusi declared.
He emphasized that the operation represents an enhanced inter-agency approach designed to counter emerging criminal patterns through coordinated action, adding that the revitalized campaign will leverage the combined resources and expertise of multiple security services operating under a unified command structure.
The Police Commissioner clarified that law-abiding citizens have nothing to fear from the security sweeps, which specifically target those “attempting to cluster and cause havoc” in the territory. He assured residents that the operation’s mandate is precisely defined to confront “criminals and criminality at whatever form and level.”
Sanusi confirmed that Operation Sweep will continue indefinitely -“for as long as the FCT remains” -with coverage extending across all Area Councils and neighboring States.
The FCT CP emphasized that the extended timeline aims to provide sustained security presence rather than temporary interventions.
Director, Department of Security Services, FCTA, Adamu Gwary revealed that the operation enjoys the full endorsement of the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, who has prioritized maintaining the Territory as a secure environment, particularly during upcoming high-profile events.
Gwary also disclosed that the Minister’s backing ensures necessary resources and political will for the success of the security initiative.
According to him, key immediate priorities of the operation include provision of robust security coverage for the approaching Sallah celebrations, managing security implications as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, and ensuring comprehensive monitoring across the FCT.
Assuring that no area would be “insulated” from the security operatives, the Director appealed to FCT residents and the international community to support the mission through timely intelligence sharing.
He maintained that this “totality activity” is crucial for establishing lasting peace as the capital prepares for significant national events in the coming months.
