President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned the 198-kilometre Bwari Township Water Supply Network Project, calling on Nigerians to remain patient as his administration’s reforms begin to yield fruits for national rebirth and long-term prosperity.

The project extends potable water to thousands of residents as part of the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s drive to improve access to essential infrastructure across the nation’s capital.

The President was represented by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the commissioning, held in the Bwari Area Council, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

He declared that the “Renewed Hope Agenda” is a binding contract to deliver governance that directly improves the lives of everyday citizens, especially those in long-neglected suburban and rural areas.

Reflecting on his administration’s three years in office, President Tinubu noted that the development of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) must be decentralized to bridge the gap between the glittering city center and underserved satellite communities.

”For too long, the narrative of Abuja has been a tale of two cities—a glittering center surrounded by underserved communities. We said no. That era is gone. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and development must be decentralized!” the President said.

The President disclosed that the newly commissioned Bwari water network, constructed by China Geo-engineering Construction (CGC) Limited, links Bwari Township and its environs directly to the Lower Usuma Dam, the territory’s primary treated water source.

He also stated that it is expected to eliminate waterborne diseases, end the costly reliance on untreated boreholes, and has already generated over 1,600 direct and indirect jobs for local youths.

President Tinubu assured FCT residents that the water revolution, which recently saw similar interventions in Karu, will eventually extend to Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Abaji Area Councils before the end of his tenure.

Speaking earlier, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike revealed that the Bwari water project marked the 50th official project commissioned by the FCT Administration since May 2023 under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He described the project as the fulfilment of President Tinubu’s directive to expand the Greater Abuja Water Supply Scheme beyond the city centre to the satellite towns.

He recalled that during the commissioning of the Greater Abuja Water Project last year, President Tinubu instructed the FCT Administration to ensure that residents of satellite communities also benefited from potable water, a promise he said has now been fulfilled.

Wike noted that following the successful completion of the Karu satellite town water project commissioned last week by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of the President, the Bwari water scheme further demonstrates the administration’s commitment to equitable infrastructure development.

According to him, the FCT Administration has deliberately expanded its focus beyond road construction to include critical sectors such as water supply that directly improve the quality of life of residents.

He disclosed that since President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, potable water has now been extended to Abuja city, Karu and surrounding communities, as well as Bwari, while major road infrastructure has also been completed across the territory.

The Minister further announced that the 17-kilometre Bwari-Kubwa Road would be commissioned before the end of the year, adding that another ten projects are expected to be inaugurated before January 2027.

Wike attributed the administration’s achievements to the unwavering support of President Tinubu, noting that effective governance thrives on strong leadership and adequate backing from the presidency.

“Governance is about improving the lives of the people and making them happy. That is exactly what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing. Without the support of the President, these achievements would not have been possible,” he said.

Earlier, the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as more than the completion of physical infrastructure, saying it represents the fulfilment of the government’s promise to improve the welfare of residents.

She said access to clean water would significantly improve public health, sanitation, education and economic activities within Bwari and neighbouring communities.

“Today, we celebrate the triumph of vision, the fulfilment of a promise and the arrival of a life-sustaining resource that nourishes communities and supports generations. Where clean water flows, healthy families flourish and confidence in government is strengthened,” she stated.

Dr Mahmoud appreciated President Tinubu for providing the leadership and resources that have enabled the FCT Administration to execute transformative projects across the territory, while urging residents to protect the new water infrastructure and ensure its sustainable use.

Presenting the technical overview of the project, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Dauda said the contract for the construction and expansion of the Bwari Water Supply Network was awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited in August 2025, and work commenced immediately.

He explained that the project was designed to expand potable water distribution across Bwari and surrounding communities in line with the FCT Regional Master Plan, which prioritises infrastructure development in satellite towns where a significant proportion of Abuja’s population resides.

Dauda disclosed that the project involved the installation of about 198 kilometres of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and UPVC pipelines, ranging from 63 millimetres to 630 millimetres in diameter, alongside156 valves, including gate, washout and air-release valves, as well as other supporting civil works.

According to him, the upgraded network will serve Bwari and neighbouring communities, including Ushafa, Ajima, Gaba and Kuchiko, significantly expanding access to safe and reliable water supply.

He added that the project complements the completed Greater Abuja Water Supply Project by providing the secondary pipeline network required to connect community distribution systems directly to end users.
