SPAIN BREAKS ARGENTINA TO WIN WORLD CUP

Spain are the 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after defeating Argentina 1 – 0 in a tense final that went into extra time before Ferran Torres struck the winning goal in New York.
Argentina arrived as defending champions hoping to give Lionel Messi another World Cup celebration, while Spain came with a young team determined to turn potential into achievement.
Neither side was willing to take unnecessary risks as the pressure of the occasion grew. Argentina relied on their experience and defensive strength, while Spain controlled possession and searched for the opening that would break the deadlock.
Messi remained Argentina’s biggest hope, but Spain kept the veteran captain away from the areas where he could cause the most damage. Their discipline frustrated Argentina, who struggled to create the clear chances needed to decide the contest.
With every passing minute, the tension increased. One mistake, one moment of quality or one piece of individual brilliance was likely to decide the fate of two teams chasing football immortality.
That moment arrived in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres found the breakthrough for Spain. The forward finished calmly to put his country ahead and leave Argentina with a race against time to save their title defence.

The celebrations that followed marked the return of the Spanish men’s team to the top of world football and secured their second World Cup crown. The victory was built on a team that understood its strengths. Spain combined experienced players with a group of young talents who played with confidence and showed they belonged among the best teams in the world.
Lamine Yamal became one of the biggest stories of the tournament. The teenager played without fear, taking on defenders and producing performances that announced him as one of football’s brightest young stars.
Rodri was another key figure in Spain’s success. The Manchester City midfielder completed 648 passes during the tournament, the highest number recorded at a World Cup, and provided the calm presence that helped Spain manage difficult moments.
Spain’s victory also created another historic achievement as they became the first nation to hold both the FIFA Men’s World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup titles at the same time.
The achievement followed the women’s team success in 2023, when Spain defeated England 1 – 0 in the final in Sydney, Australia.
For Argentina, the defeat brought a difficult end to their attempt to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to defend the World Cup title. Messi once again carried the hopes of his country, but Spain denied him another historic triumph.
The 2026 World Cup also entered history as the first tournament to feature 48 teams. The expanded format brought more countries into the competition and created new stories as teams with less traditional success challenged established football powers.
Played across the United States, Mexico and Canada, the tournament featured 104 matches and attracted millions of supporters. It produced memorable performances, unexpected results and a new generation of players ready to take centre stage.
