Minister of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has expressed strong satisfaction with the pace and quality of ongoing infrastructure projects across the Territory, reassuring residents that at least 10 major road developments will be commissioned before the general elections.

Speaking with newsmen after an inspection tour of some project sites, on Wednesday, 19 August, 2026, Wike noted that the exercise was part of routine monitoring to track performance following the flag-off during the administration’s third-anniversary celebrations.

His words: “Assessments along the Tungan Madaki axis leading down to Zuba showed that the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), had successfully executed five out of six targeted culverts, with assurances given that the entire stretch would be handed over on schedule.”

The Minister also commented on the ongoing works in the Institution and Research District, around the Nile University area, praising the handling firm for maintaining steady momentum despite receiving less than 30 percent mobilization funds.

He described the ongoing efforts as commendable, noting that such dedication underscores the commitment of corporate entities to the rapid growth and development of the nation’s capital.

Addressing concerns over funding, Wike assured that the FCT Administration would fulfill its financial obligations to ensure smooth project delivery, stressing that completion of the ongoing road networks will significantly ease movement and transform the landscape of the city center.

When questioned about capacity of the contractor handling the challenging Tungan Madaki-Zuba corridor, the Minister maintained absolute confidence in the team, emphasizing that the contractor possesses both the proven track record and heavy-duty equipment necessary to meet the deadline.

Shifting focus to enforcement measures, Wike affirmed that recent directives against illegal developments and environmental encroachments would extend beyond Maitama to other parts of the Federal Capital Territory, including flood-prone areas in Lugbe and Wuse II.

In line with these measures, the Minister revealed that a query was issued to the Director of Urban Planning for unauthorized approvals granted to car dealers operating in designated green zones.

“Certainly, we have just started somewhere. After that, we will move to other areas. We are not going to end just with what we started yesterday.

“Apart from that, this morning, the Director of Urban is being queried now for giving approval to car dealers to use the green areas for the sale of cars. You can imagine, everywhere you have green, you have vehicles now,” he stated.

To curb the practice, he disclosed that a dedicated task force has been established to clear car sales points from green areas and recreational spaces, requiring vendors to acquire or lease appropriate commercial land instead.

Regarding structural demolitions, the Minister clarified that removing illegal buildings erected on natural drainage paths remains non-negotiable to prevent recurrent flooding across the Territory.

Dismissing criticisms surrounding due process in recent enforcement actions, the Minister stated that erecting structures on water channels violates planning laws and endangers public safety, emphasizing that firm enforcement remains necessary to uphold master plan compliance and safeguard public interest.
