The Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) has commenced a comprehensive waste evacuation exercise across the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as part of efforts to keep the satellite towns clean and green.
The exercise is being carried out in line with the directive of the Honourable Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, as part of the administration’s efforts to improve environmental sanitation and maintain cleaner communities across the Territory.
Speaking at the commencement of the exercise on Monday, the Coordinator of STDD, Hon. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, said the evacuation commenced with immediate effect and would cover communities across all six Area Councils.
He directed the Acting Director of Environmental Services, Engr. Hassan Dogondaji, and his team of environmental professionals to immediately commence the exercise.
According to Zulkiflu, the operation began in Karu and Kurudu, with plans to extend the evacuation to other communities, including Orozo and Jikwoyi under the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), among others.
The Coordinator said the exercise was necessary to support the cleanliness of the satellite towns and reduce the environmental risks associated with indiscriminate waste disposal.
He also called on residents to complement the efforts of STDD by adopting responsible waste disposal practices.
Zulkiflu specifically urged residents to package their waste properly and desist from dumping refuse on roads, drainages and other unauthorised locations.
He further warned residents against building on waterways, noting that such practices could obstruct the natural flow of water and increase the risk of flooding.
“Flooding is not a friend to anyone, whether rich or poor,” he stated.
The Coordinator stressed that maintaining a clean and safe environment requires the participation of both government and residents.
“Keeping our environment clean is a collective responsibility. Help STDD to serve you better,” he said.
The ongoing evacuation exercise is expected to cover communities across the six Area Councils as STDD continues its efforts to improve environmental sanitation and support the development of cleaner, healthier and more sustainable satellite towns in the FCT.
