Enyimba FC has emerged champions of the 2022/23 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Super 6 playoffs.

The two-time African champions dethroned previous titleholders, Rivers United, in a fiercely competitive final game held in Lagos on Sunday.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw but Enyimba claimed their ninth league title, thanks to a better goals difference ahead of runners-up Remo Stars, as they both finished the playoffs tied on nine points.

Enyimba led going into the break, thanks to Ekene Awazie‘s goal, which followed a missed clearance by Rivers United’s defenders. However, Rivers United responded early in the second half through Nyima Nwagua, who restored parity.

Entering the game with the pressure of needing a victory to retain their title, Rivers United found it hard to breach the Enyimba defense, as their opponents put up a spirited fight.

Following their victory, Enyimba will now feature in the CAF Champions League, while Rivers United and third-placed Akwa United will play in the CAF Confederation Cup
