The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has called on residents of the nation’s capital to embrace a change of attitude through proper hygiene and sanitation in their personal lives and communities.

The Overseeing Director, FCT Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Directorate (RUWASSA), Mr. Luke Ifop Ulom, made the call at an event to mark the 2024 World Toilet Day held recently in Kwali Area Council.

The event was organised by RUWASSA in collaboration with the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).

The Director, who noted that the event was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 to address the global sanitation crisis, also added that the occasion was to create awareness on the importance of sanitation and hygiene.

He, therefore, called on residents of the FCT to support government actions towards eradicating open defecation in the Territory by constructing and using the toilet.

The Head of Sanitation Unit, FCT RUWASSA Mrs. Aisha Bakpet, disclosed that 171 communities had been certified open defecation-free by the FCT Task Group on Sanitation, and more communities are still expected to be certified based on the National Open Defecation Free Protocol.

Three wards, she added, were also recognized as having the highest open defecation free communities, with each of the communities issued certificates.

The communities pledged their commitment towards eradicating open defecation by consolidating on the success recorded.
